Thank You Pudsey
May 24th, 2010This week the organisations receiving grants from the Children In Need South West area have been announced. Horizons has been very fortunate in being awarded a three year grant to maintain and develop further our Out of Schools sailing clubs and summer holiday clubs.
This grant has meant we have covered some of the wages cost for a full three years of this part of our provision, taking a little strain off of our fundraising.
On Saturday 15th BBC camera crews visited Horizons and filmed a full mornings sailing activities. The weather was perfect with everyone having the opportunity to show off in front of the camera. Some even got the opportunity to be film stars and were asked a few questions. The BBC announced the winners on Monday the 17th of June with BBC Spotlight featuring Horizons Out of School sailing clubs. Nearly two hours of filming was condensed into two minutes. Well done to all on the day we looked like very worthy candidates for the grant.
On Friday at the Devon County Show Craig met with other grant award winners for a photo shoot with Judi Spiers and the big Yellow Bear ‘Pudsey’. Nearly £320,000 has been spent on good causes such as Horizons in the South West this year from Children in Need. We are also the proud owner of a small Pudsey bear that Molly has taken a liking to…..

Sainsbury’s seach for a local charity
May 12th, 2010Sainsbury’s (Plymouth – Armada Centre) are looking for nominations for their chosen local charity for 2010/11.
All we need to do is get all of our supporters, friends and neighbours to fill in the simple leaflet which can be found just in-store (or at Horizons) there is just 4 Questions and you dont have to put your name to it.
We need to accumulate enough to be one of the top four entrants, at which point all four are then invited to give a short presentation to staff and they will sellect a winner.

Puffing Billy is named
May 7th, 2010
Lottie naming "Puffing Billy" standing alongside Rod O'Connor (Chairman) and The Rev Bill Weldon (Trustee)
The first Thursday began with the naming and dedication of our new Laser Pico purchased with a grant from The Hedley Foundation. This Pico is one of the newest designs from Laser and has an improved aluminium daggerboard and rudder, the bonus to us is that they all float! Included in the basic boat package was a set of racing sail which will enable some more advanced training and being able to sail on even terms when we race with other local clubs.
All the young people that attended on the night were given a number, using our 100 numbers lottery bag no. 30 was drawn and Lottie Molesworth won the honour of naming the boat.
The citation that Lottie read said “On behalf of all of the sailors at Horizons I would like to thank The Hedley Foundation for buying us this new Pico. In honour of their founder William Hedley who made the first steam engine in 1817 – I name this Pico PUFFING BILLY”
The Rev Bill Weldon one of Horizons Trustee gave a short speech about the foundation of Horizons from the very beginnings with the Rev Bob Hill and Steve Payne followed by a prayer and blessed “Puffing Billy” and all who sail in her.

Plymouth Sound to Hand Deeps Buoy and Return
Prize giving and supper on completion at The Royal Western Yacht Club
This is our major fundraising event of the year. We have taken part in all but one of these events since its conception and this is a fantastic opportunity for our young sailors to meet and sail yachts in a mass fleet event.
This is a pursuit event and yachts start (slowest first) and sail around Hand Deeps Buoy and back through the Royal western start/finish line. This is a charity event and your finishing position is not only based on how well your boat sails but also on how much money has been raised in sponsorship on the yacht for your favourite charity (us). Prize money is also paid to the charity all the way down to yachts coming in 50th.
This is a well attended event with 70+ yachts last year with 12 yachts sailing for Horizons also taking our young sailors on as crew. We also enter our thee Hawk 20’s filled with our sailors (and food).
This is an exhilarating all day event that Horizons has always been very successful in not only on the prize money and sponsorship but also getting a great proportion of our young people afloat in yachts of all sizes and engaging in the end of race social activities.
Please think about sponsoring our children or a yacht, also if you know someone with a yacht that might like to have a great day out and support us please get them to get in touch with Craig or Jon.

Volunteers Vestival
April 24th, 2010
Alex talking to the Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth with Craig (in Pink)
On Saturday 24th April we were invited to join the Volunteers Vestival on The Piazza (Plymouth City Centre) this was an event to showcase Volunteering and how to get involved. Horizons went to highlight the volunteering opportunities we have available and to promote our activities to clubs and individuals. Alex one of our young disabled sailors turned up just as the Deputy Lord Mayor Jonathan Drean arrived and Alex took time out to explain about “Friendship of Plymouth” and how much he enjoyed the experience. It was a long if not loud day (the stage with local youth bands were next to our end of the marquee) with plenty if interest shown. Thank you to the organisers Emily and Larissa of BTCV and Vinvolve for the invite. The reason we were invited is that their organisation has introduced us to volunteers who have signed up and helped us in a variety of way. We have been invited to other events (promotion and fundraising) throughout the year – take a look at the Calendar in this Blog – if you can help please contact Jon or Craig.

Can you row faster than Craig, here are a few lining up to try.
Craig took his rowing machine to spice up the event, with Vestival volunteers and general public taking part in a timed 200m row. Craig can come to a local event and run a rowing competition to raise money for Horizons so ideas please to Craig.
